Benedict Cumberbatch plays Morrissey-inspired character in The Simpsons, Angers Morrissey

Benedict Cumberbatch voiced an animated Morrissey-like singer The Simpsons last night (April 18). The character, named Quilloughby, is a depressed British crooner from the 1980s who becomes Lisa Simpson’s imaginary friend. The episode was titled ‘Panic on the Streets of Springfield’, a ghost on the Smiths’ single ‘Panic’ from 1986. Find two tracks from the episode below.

While writing on social media, Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords co-wrote the faux-Morrissey songs that appeared in the episode with Tim Long. McKenzie wrote that he “woke up at 3 o’clock in New Zealand to pick up the sultry crown of Benedict Cumberbatch in London and zoom in on some sweet harmonies in LA with Yeardley Smith.” Find his full post below.

In a post on Morrissey’s official Facebook page, ‘Panic on the Streets of Springfield’ after the delivery of The Simpsons broadcast. “Unfortunately, The Simpson’s show started by creating a great insight into the modern cultural experience, but has since degenerated into trying to capitalize on cheap controversy and the interpretation of cruel rumors,” the report reads. In addition, the manufacturers of The Simpsons for “[using] hard hateful tactics like showing the Morrissey character with his belly hanging out of his shirt. ”

Last month a trailer for the Smiths-inspired film Shoplifters of the world was released. The film, directed and written by Stephen Kijak, is based on a largely embellished story about a disturbed Smiths fan who held a radio station in Denver hostage in the 1980s and demanded that the DJs only play songs by the Smiths .
