Ben & Jerry’s makes dog ice cream as pet food industry grows

Ben & Jerry’s is expanding its ice cream offerings to another species.

The Vermont-based company announced Monday that it has launched Doggie Desserts, a special ice cream line for man’s best friend.

Doggie desserts are made in four-ounce small cups and filled with ice cream formulated to be safe for dogs, according to a website of Ben & Jerry’s FAQ.

The ice cream is apparently cut with a very limited amount of dairy products and is based on sunflower butter. Each cup is blended with the distinctive flavors of Ben & Jerry, found in the human versions, which also make Doggie Desserts safe for people to try if they are brave enough to taste.

So far, there are two flavors of Doggie Desserts available. There’s a carrot mixture of peanut butter and crackling, known as Pontch’s Mix, and a mixture of pumpkin and mini cookies, known as Rosie’s Batch.

Ben & Jerry’s sells his Doggie Desserts in single cups and four-pack boxes. Customers can order Doggie Desserts in person at a Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop or online through a third-party delivery partner. The dog-friendly frozen treats will also be available in grocery stores across the country.
