Ben Higgins learned that appearing on TV is not always everything.
The former star of The old guy was a guest on the Thursday, January 28 episode of the Click on Bait With Bachelor Nation podcast, where he opened when he knew the romance was over Lauren Bushnell. The couple became engaged during its final finale of the ABC series that aired in March 2016, but announced the end of their relationship in May 2017.
“I don’t think there was a trait that was wrong, necessarily, but the timing of our lives, right?” he explains. “I was 26, she was 25, we just walked into this whole new world together. We lived in Denver, where she knew no one, and then life pulls us in a thousand different directions.”
As fans remember, the engaged couple chose the unusual way to play in their own reality show Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?, which premiered on Freeform in October 2016. The unwritten series contains more than a few awkward moments of tension, and Ben explained on the podcast that it was the result of the two not knowing how to have ‘direct communication’ during the early stages of their relationship, as cameras continue to roll.

“If it’s anything, we were still getting to know each other, so we were not teammates,” the 31-year-old said. Fortunately, those lessons have borne fruit. He later met Jessica Clarke on social media, and the two of them got engaged in March 2020. As Ben remembers on the podcast, Jessica was very surprised when she arrived at his house after meeting him for the first time.

Knowing that she was the right person to spend his life with, Ben explained that within a few months of meeting her, he had already made up his mind.
