Bears ‘Jay Rodgers leaves for Los Angeles Chargers’ job

It sounds like Jay Rodgers will not be the next Bears defense coordinator.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago defense coach is leaving for a job with Brandon Staley at the Los Angeles Chargers. NBC Sports Chicago can also confirm the move:

Rodgers, who joined the Bears in 2015 as a d-line coach, was one of the most respected assistants in Matt Nagy’s staff. He and Staley both worked under then-defense coordinator Vic Fangio in 2018, when the Bears ended the year with the best defense of the past decade.

The departure of Rodgers means that Sean Desai, the safe coach, is the only internal candidate left. The team is also reportedly looking at Mike Singletary, Jonathan Gannon, coach of Colts DB, George Edwards, defensive assistant of Cowboys, and James Bettcher, former Cardinals and Giants DC.
