Bears DL coach Jay Rodgers would leave for Chargers

With the Chicago Bears in the midst of a search for a new defensive coordinator to replace a retired Chuck Pagano, it sounds as if they will also be looking for a new coach for the defensive line.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Jay Rodgers, the defensive coach, is expected to reunite with former Bears coach Brandon Staley, who has been appointed as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Biggs did not specify the specific role, but it could be a defensive coordinator.

Rodgers oversaw some impressive defensive line units and was an integral part of the development of, among others, Eddie Goldman, Bilal Nichols, Roy Robertson-Harris and Nick Williams.

It was reported earlier that passing game coordinator Dave Ragone could go to the Atlanta Falcons, where he is a favorite to win the offensive coordinator role under new head coach Arthur Smith.

According to Biggs, fullback coach Charles London could also be on his way to the Falcons.

The Bears are currently looking for a defense coordinator to succeed Pagano, and they have already conducted a number of interviews. According to The Athletic, Chicago interviewed former Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants defense coordinator James Bettcher, Indianapolis Colts defense coach Jonathan Gannon, and Bears legend Mike Singletary for defense coordinator.

Rodgers, along with Sean Desai, a safety coach, was once considered a favorite candidate to occupy the defense coordinator, but that now does not sound likely.
