Baylor St. Luke’s partnered with Texas Southern University to host COVID-19 vaccine clinics

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – People lined up on the campus of Texas Southern University on Tuesday to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

TSU works with Baylor St. Luke to provide vaccines in the communities around the university. The effort is specifically aimed at the elderly in vulnerable populations.

The vaccination clinic is not open to the public. But we are told that the available vaccines became known and that people started showing up.

“I’m glad they put it in the neighborhood. When I got the text saying it’s here, I got up and came,” said Barbara Daniels, who arrived at 8 a.m. to vaccinate her. gain.

Daniels said that although she is not yet 65, she does have an underlying condition that meets the vaccine requirements.

According to state guidelines, people in the following groups are eligible to be vaccinated now.

Phase 1A: Frontline healthcare workers and residents at long-term care facilities

Phase 1B: People 65+ or people 16+ with a health condition that increases the risk of serious COVID19 disease, including but not limited to:

  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathy

“It’s protection you know. It’s a 50/50 chance. If you do not get it, it’s something to help you feel safer,” Terry Verrett said of the vaccination.

Another man, Emiel Owens, said he brought his wife Monday to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and there were no lines.

But by Tuesday, when he returned to take a family member, he described the line as ‘humongous’.

“But it’s good. We serve the community, and that’s part of the institution’s mission,” Owens said.

He spoke to ABC13 about his wife’s process of getting the vaccine, and explained that she had to have her temperature taken and paperwork filled in when she went in.

“I’m sure it’s to find out who’s getting the vaccine, and then it was just a quick process. She got the chance and came out,” he said.

‘We not only serve students, we are also part of the third ward community and actually the Houston community, and therefore we are only acting in terms of what we need to do to solve this particular problem that the world is with this COVID-19, ‘continued Owens.

Baylor St. Luke’s has a link to sign up for information on receiving a COVID-19 vaccine from TSU.

ABC13 is also getting more details on how long the clinic will last and whether they plan to expand it.
