Barstool’s Portnoy throws historic NYC bar a lifeline while struggling during COVID

A family-run bar gets a lifeline from Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Fund while struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.

Peter McManus Café, one of the oldest pubs in the city, called from Portnoy a few hours after applying for help.

During the call, Portnoy told owner Justin McManus that it was an “easy story to find out.”

“I’m glad I picked up a random FaceTime from a Boston number I did not have in my phone,” McManus told FOX Business ‘Varney & Co.’ said. “It was all fast.”

The 84-year-old bar, started by McManus’ great-grandfather, spans four generations and is proud of its family line.

“My great-grandfather is Peter McManus, and he did … start our family business. But it was my grandfather, James Sr., who was in World War II and got the two Purple Hearts. ‘

While McManus is not sure how much his business will receive, he is hopeful that the promised monthly payments will be enough to keep him afloat in the foreseeable future.

McManus explained that ‘one of the great things’ about this fund compared to a traditional grant is the ongoing financial support.

‘They said they want to be with you every month and … have to move forward until this pandemic is over or … until … we see numbers like before so that … I do not need extra help. ‘
