Baker Mayfield responds to fans’ suggestion that the Browns think about Deshaun Watson

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Baker Mayfield’s ears went up on Thursday when at least one website suggested that the Browns should consider trading for Deshaun Watson, Texards’ full-back.

The fansided site Dawg Pound Daily wrote an article in which he said that Watson would represent an upgrade, and then tweeted with the headline “The Cleveland #Browns need to think about Deshaun Watson.”

Mayfield tweeted it with the answer: ‘Some of you all’ brown ‘are funny,’ which means ‘brown fans’. ‘

Mayfield, who trailed 11-5 this season and lost the Chiefs 22-17 in the AFC division round, has mostly stayed out of Twitter wars this season, but could not help him this time.

But he probably has nothing to worry about anyway.

The Browns are unlikely to trade that way because they are committed to Mayfield, and because the Texans have no plans to trade the three-time Pro Bowler, despite saying he was still on Thursday, the day of the team, want to be treated. David Culley appointed as his new head coach.

The new GM Nick Caserio reiterated the club’s commitment to Watson at a press conference on Friday, which they won in 2017 from no. 25 to number 12 with the Browns exchanged to line up.

“He has had a huge impact on this organization, a huge impact on a lot of people, and a huge impact on this team,” Caserio said. ‘We look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with him here this spring as soon as we get going.

“We have no interest in trading the player. We have a good plan, a good vision for him and for this team and his role in our team. We look forward to the opportunity to spend more time with him here this spring. ”

Watson, who reportedly wanted the Texans to interview former 49ers defense coordinator Robert Saleh before being appointed by the Jets, reportedly told the club he wanted to come out regardless of who the new head coach is.

“The best way to handle relationships is to communicate, be honest and be straightforward. We are going to do it with everyone in this building, ”Caserio added.

“There are going to be player decisions we have to make, and we make it one day at a time.”

Culley, the longtime disciple of Chiefs coach Andy Reid and former Ravens assistant head coach, wide receiving coach and passing game coordinator in 2019-20, reflected the sentiments and sound confident that he can smooth the water.

“Deshaun Watson is a Houston Texan,” he said. “That’s all I was worried about and everything I knew. Whatever is said about what he wanted to do, he’s a Houston Texan. I want him to be a Houston Texan. The reason I’m in this post today is because I knew he was going to become a Houston-Texan. The extras that have been said are irrelevant to me.

“The most important thing for me is to find out what I can do after talking to (everyone).”

Meanwhile, the Browns have made it clear that Mayfield is their quarterback of the future, without calling him their “franchise quarter.”

“He did an excellent job,” Browns GM Andrew Berry said after the season. “He led us to the first time in eons. We had 12 wins, played winning football all year and developed a very strong relationship with Kevin [Stefanski] and the offensive staff and really, as I mentioned last week, he really thrives weekly on as well as off the field. We are very, very pleased with him.

“At the end of the season we would not be where we are without his actions. He really had a great season. ”

The next issue for the Browns regarding Mayfield is to exercise its fifth-year option between $ 18 million and $ 21 million for 2022 by the May 3 deadline. After that, they will determine if it is the right move to sign him at the long-term contract extension he is eligible for this off-season, or they will wait to see how the next season or the entire season goes.
