Bahrain celebrates Holocaust Remembrance Day for the first time

For the first time in history, the Jewish community in Bahrain marked Holocaust Remembrance Day in a virtual ceremony initiated by ‘The House Of Ten Commandments’.

Only a few months after the signing of the Abrahamic Chords, of which Bahrain was one of the signatories, an unforgettable ceremony was held in a Jewish community synagogue that was recently renovated as part of a king’s initiative.

The ceremony was led by Ambassador Houda Nono, a member of a Jewish family who had previously served as Ambassador to Bahrain in the United States.

The guest of honor at the event was Amb. Dr. Dore Gold, President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and former Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who met with Amb. Nono during his visit to Bahrain in December 2020.

On the Arabian Peninsula, Jewish communities are hosting a series of events marking Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day Thursday as another sign of the warming ties between Gulf states and their Jewish population.
The Association of Jewish Communities on the Gulf will present a webinar on Thursday, moderated by Emily Judd of the Higher Committee for Human Brotherhood, which will involve both Muslims and Jews.

The webinar features two young Muslims, Fetama al Harbi from Bahrain and Thoufeek Zakriya from the United Arab Emirates, who will discuss their experiences during their recent visit to the Yad Vashem Museum.

The Jewish communities of Bahrain and Dubai also took part in the yellow candle project, the worldwide effort to remember the victims of the Holocaust, in which members of each community lit a yellow candle in memory of the Jews living in the Nazi genocide perished.
