BAGHDAD – Twin suicide bombings hit Iraq’s capital on Thursday, killing at least six people and wounding at least 25 others, three police officers and State TV said.
The police said two explosions hit a commercial center in downtown Baghdad. Iraqi state television reported that it was a suicide bombing. Many of the wounded were in a serious condition and there was damage to property.

The police officers spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with the regulations.

The bombings are the first in years to target Baghdad’s active trading area. They are coming amid heightened political tensions because Iraq wants elections earlier in October.
