The ceremony was split over two evenings for the first time ever and was hosted on Saturday night by Clara Amfo and Rhianna Dhillon and Sunday night by Dermot O’Leary and Edith Bowman. Celebrities who have personally appeared to present awards include Tom Hiddleston, Cynthia Erivo, Phoebe Dynevor, James McAvoy, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Hugh Grant.

The ceremony was delayed by two months due to the pandemic, and it comes just two weeks before the Oscars rounded off the awards season on April 26.

A striking thing about the 2021 awards was their inclusivity, with numerous colored candidates and four unprecedented women receiving the best director award!

After a scream that BAFTA’s nominees were predominantly white last year, this year’s shortlist process is subject to a number of changes, including a new longlist round, and an increase in the number of nominations in various categories, including the Outstanding British Film , Dear Director, and all four major acting fields.

As a result, this year’s ceremony was the most diverse in BAFTA history, with 16 of the 24 acting candidates as colored, and four of the nominees for best director being women – Shannon Murphy (Baba-tande), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), Jasmila Žbanić (Quo Vadis, Aida?), and Sarah Gavron (Rocks).

This year’s BAFTAs achieved a record number of black winners and minority ethnic winners, and this is the second female winner of the best director ever! Here are some highlights from the night:
