Chloé Zhao, Daniel Kaluuya and Ang Lee all walked away with awards!
The 74th British Academy Film Awards concluded last night after a two-day ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in which nominations and winners virtually appeared.
The ceremony was delayed by two months due to the pandemic, and it comes just two weeks before the Oscars rounded off the awards season on April 26.
A striking thing about the 2021 awards was their inclusivity, with numerous colored candidates and four unprecedented women receiving the best director award!
This year’s BAFTAs achieved a record number of black winners and minority ethnic winners, and this is the second female winner of the best director ever! Here are some highlights from the night:
Chloé Zhao has the best director for Nomadland, who also won Best Picture and Frances McDormand a Leading Actress.
Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for his work on Judas and the Black Messiah, and Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Supporting Actress for Minari.
The success of her starring role in the indie movie, Rocks, Bukky Bakray was voted the winner of the EE Rising Star Award by the public.
Writer-director Remi Weekes won the Outstanding Debut Award by a British writer, director or producer for his film His house.
Emerald Fennell’s Promising young woman won both the excellent British film and the best original screenplay.
Pixar’s latest feature film Soul won two awards for best animated film and best original score.
The award for the outstanding British contribution to the cinema was awarded Maturity and Bulletproof creator, Noel Clarke, while the Bafta Fellowship went to the prolific director Ang Lee, known for films such as Brokeback Mountain; Squatting tiger, hidden dragon; and Sense and sensitivity.
A full list of the winners of the evening can be found here. We hope it can become the new standard in the award ceremony of the film industry!
