Back 4 Blood confirms the return of the important Left 4 Dead feature

Behind 4 Blood is Turtle Rock Studios’ spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead franchise, and it looks like the game will bring back a feature that makes the series popular. In a new video, the developer reveals that the game director of Left 4 Dead will return in Back 4 Blood. For those unfamiliar with the feature, it made an AI possible to change the ways each level is played. This led to various objects, enemy spawns and more. Back 4 Blood will not only contain this feature, but it also sounds like it will expand in some interesting ways.

The video from Turtle Rock Studios can be found below.

According to Turtle Rock, Back 4 Blood will take it a step further with the addition of a new mechanic called Corruption Cards. At the beginning of the level, the game director will use these cards so that it can change things like the strength of the enemies, the visibility of the card or the opponents that players encounter. To counteract these cards, players can use their own cards, which can have a positive impact on the player’s health, endurance and more. Finding the right counter can mean the difference between life and death, and the concept should give the game a lot of repeat value. As a result, the developer claims that “no experience will be twice the same.” More information about the card system can be found here.

Given the popularity of Left 4 Dead, there is a lot of pressure on Turtle Rock Studios to make sure that Back 4 Blood meet the high standards of fans. Many spiritual successors have struggled to do so over the years, but Back 4 Blood looks very promising so far, and the improvement of the game director function should be very interesting. For fans of Left 4 Dead, and those who just want to kill hordes of zombies with friends, Back 4 Blood definitely looks like a promising game to watch out for!

Back 4 Blood will be released later this year on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.
