Azure Active Directory Issue Removes Teams, Office, Dynamics, and More for Some Users

An issue with Azure Active Directory that is causing authentication issues affects a subset of Microsoft customers worldwide in many Microsoft services, including Office, Dynamics, Teams, Xbox Live, and the Azure Portal. Customers started complaining on March 15 at around 15:15 ET about their inability to use services used on top of Azure, and from 17:15 ET the problem was still unresolved.

Currently, a message on the Azure Status page reads: “CURRENT STATUS: Engineering teams have identified a possible underlying cause and are investigating mitigation options. The next update will be provided within 60 minutes or if the events warrant.”

Because the admin portal is also used on Azure, a number of users on Twitter complained that they could not get an update on the interruption.

This is not the first time that an Azure Active Directory authentication issue has led to interruptions in numerous Microsoft services. At the end of September 2020, Microsoft had several Azure AD authentication issues that affected many of its services.

Update (17:20 ET): Microsoft seems to be a solution. From the Azure status page: “CURRENT STATUS: Engineering teams are currently implementing mitigation worldwide. Customers should start seeing recovery at this point, with full mitigation expected within 60 minutes.”

This is an evolving story. More to come.
