Axiom Verge, the partner Metroid– as developed only by indie designer Thomas Happ, still gets new content long after it originally came out. A new update each time you play will make the game feel like new by randomizing the order in which you get new weapons and unlocking new areas.

The randomizer is currently available in the Steam and Epic Games Store versions as a beta version, and the origins of the randomizer are due to the work of Axiom Verge‘s quick community and especially the creator of the mod that goes through Pozzum.

‘[T]hey came up with an unofficial version that had to use a legal copy of the game, and has been working with me ever since to incorporate it into the game as an official way of the game, ‘writes Happ in a new developer update. ‘They worked on this for years and refused any compensation I offered. It was a labor of love, and I am all very grateful. ”

As a side-scroller who gets inspiration from Metroid, Axiom Verge turn to explore levels, find new upgrades and startups, and use them to return and reach new areas previously blocked by obstacles. The challenging part for any randomizer then is to make sure that things are randomized in such a way that players do not get stuck in one area without access to the powers needed to progress to the next one.

Happ gave the example of the starting area whose requirement is simply to be able to shoot things, so that any upgrade that meets the criteria can be included in the pool of possibilities. Similarly, there is a section later where you get the Kilver rifle that allows you to shoot through barriers. There are also other weapons that can do this so that it can also be replaced in this particular part of the progression path.

The new mode contains three different options:

  • ‘Beginner’ for players who have beaten the game several times but want to play in the normal way.
  • ‘Advanced’ for speeders who are familiar with how to slip through certain obstacles and sections.
  • “Masochist” for Axiom Verge experts who are well acquainted with all its peculiarities, faults and secrets.

“Right now, there are exactly 4 people in the world who can play this mode,” Happ writes. ‘If you do not know that you are one of them, you probably are not. This mode of progression is mainly included because the above people who developed this mode include the masochists involved. ”

If you want to get an idea of what Happ is talking about, check out this speedrun of the game from Awesome Games Done Quick 2021:

It’s neat to see that an indie game gets new life in it from 2015 many years later, but especially as a collaborative effort between the game’s developer and his passionate speedsters. And although the randomizer is currently only available in a beta version on a computer, it will be free to console versions in the future.

It also makes me jazz Axiom edge 2. It was originally last year delayed in the fall to somewhere in the first half of 2021. Fortunately, that sounds like it’s still the case. Writte Happ: “I’m finishing it and will talk more about it soon.”
