Avatar set to beat Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing movie after its release

Avatar is on the verge of reclaiming the title of highest-grossing movie of all time, thanks to its return to Chinese movie theaters this weekend. James Cameron’s science fiction film Avatar was the biggest earner in the world for almost ten years until Avengers Endgame was released in 2019. The margin was thin because Endgame’s gross amount of $ 2.7902 billion neatly exceeded Avatar’s $ 2.7797 billion.

However, as reported by Variety, Avatar was re-released in theaters across China over the weekend where it earned $ 3.5 million on Friday and took the total of the film to $ 2.77926. Box office watchers expect Avatar’s total to come out on top again once the weekend’s totals are calculated.

China’s film bureau has called for popular films, such as Avatar, to be re-released as a way to help its theater openings. Avatar was a hit in the country and earned $ 206 million when it was released there in 2010.

The recording of Avatar’s gross record was previously aided when the film was re-released in theaters in 2010 with an extensive theater series. This reissue added $ 33.2 million to Avatar’s box office profits.

Ultimately, the biggest winner here is Disney, which now owns Avatar after acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019. Regardless of whether Avatar or Avengers Endgame is the best earnings of all time, both are Disney properties, along with six others from the top 10 earnings movies of all time.

Meanwhile, James Cameron is working on two more Avatar sequels for 2022 and 2024, respectively. And Marvel’s Phase 4 has begun thanks to the TV premieres of WandaVision and the upcoming Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
