Authorities working to link bomb threats in Durham, Knightdale Walmarts: WRAL.com

Authorities are now investigating bomb threats made at two different Walmart stores in the area on Sunday morning. Law enforcement agencies are working to determine if the two threats are related.

KNIGHTDALE

A Walmart in Knightdale was evacuated around 8:30 a.m. for a bomb threat. From noon it was reopened.

The Wake County Sheriff has confirmed a bomb threat at Walmart at Knightdale Blvd 7106. A man called the store to say he had placed devices around the building and threatened to explode them unless he gave a certain amount of money.

At 10:30 a.m., police said there was apparently no threat in the store. Everyone evacuated safely.

After three hours of searching for clues through the inside of the building, the sign was ‘clearly’ given at 11:45. Bomb-sniffing dogs and drones were used.

“The content of these claims leads us to believe that there are other issues at play there,” said Lawrence Capps, Knightdale police chief.

“We are grateful for the outcome of the incident,” Capps said. ‘Although this threat was unfounded, I am delighted with the way our officials and our regional partners have come together to address it. The combined reaction was complicated and helpful. It is a testament to the working conditions that exist in our country, and a testament to a united commitment to public safety. ”

A woman on a shopping trip told WRAL that emergency personnel rushed to the Knightdale store and told her she had to leave.

“It’s like, oh wow, what did I just end up with now?” said Kris Minton. “It was a scary experience.”

There were no injuries. Knightdale Fire Department and EMS also responded.

DURHAM

In addition, Durham police are investigating a bomb threat at the Walmart at 1525 Glenn School Rd. in Durham. The threat was called around 08:10 and the caller noticed that he was in the men’s bathroom at the store, with a dozen pipe bombs going off.

Durham police said the caller used the same name and voice-over-internet protocol (commonly called VOIP) phone number as the bomb threat for the Knightdale store. The number was sent via the internet to disguise the location.

The store is open again after being closed for a few hours.

No explosive devices were found. No injuries were reported.

Officers entered the store, which is located between Interstate 85 and E. Geer St. located, barred.

Authorities began filming on the Durham Walmart tape at about 10:50 p.m. Ambulances and fire trucks left the store.
