Australia’s most populous state hit by heavy rains, floods

SYDNEY (AP) – Australia’s most populous state of New South Wales on Sunday issued more evacuation orders after the worst floods in decades.

The Emergency Services in New South Wales responded to 640 calls for help on Saturday night, including 66 for flood rescue.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said hundreds of people had been rescued from the waters.

Evacuation orders have been issued at several locations on the Mid-North Coast in the northeast of the state, which Berejiklian said was a one-to-one-100-year event, and ‘although we do not think things will get worse in the Middle East’ -North coast conditions will definitely continue, so the rainfall will continue over the parts already affected. ”

Berejiklian also said parts of western Sydney were hit by one- to 50-year-old weather conditions, and some places had recorded more than 300 millimeters (11.8 inches) of rain since Friday morning, breaking records.

Warragamba Dam, west of Sydney, began overflowing on Sunday and so far 13 evacuation centers have been opened across the state. More evacuations are expected as the bad weather is expected to last until the middle of the week.

Local authorities are appealing to people not to drive through flooded areas as they can be easily swept away by the strong currents.
