Historically, low temperatures will continue for several days, and Atmos Energy is focused on providing safe and reliable service to its key customers, including homes, hospitals, churches and other human needs organizations. Business customers who are asked to limit their natural gas consumption are asked to comply, and we can all help by taking small steps to support our community.
Take these steps to reduce energy consumption now:
- Lower your thermostat to at least 68 degrees. Consider putting on extra layers of clothing and turning the thermostat down even lower.
- Businesses need to reduce energy consumption as much as possible.
- Lower the temperature of the water heater to 120 degrees, as it can make up as much as 25 percent of the energy consumed in your home.
- Disconnect electronic devices and turn off unused lights. By saving electricity, you also help save natural gas that keeps the power going.
- Reduce shower time and avoid bathing. Showering is about 40 percent of the use of hot water in your home.
- Do not use for the next few days to use large appliances such as your washing machine, dryer, oven and dishwasher. If you use the oven door, it should be limited to prevent wasted energy.
- Keep your fireplace shut off unless there is a fire. Leaving the damper open is like keeping a window open – hot air goes straight up the chimney!
- Do not use the pool heater if you have a pool. Have your pool pump installed during the coldest part of the day to allow the water to circulate and prevent freezing.
Atmos Energy reminds customers to consider the guidance of local leaders and to be alert to changing weather conditions in their area. Our teams are providing safe and reliable service, and we appreciate your patience during this historic event. In addition to the reduced energy consumption, you must also remember the following ways to stay safe at home:
- Never use an oven or a gas stove to heat your home.
- Protect natural gas meters. Natural gas meters are weather resistant; However, to ensure that the meter continues to work smoothly, remove snow and ice from the natural gas meters with a broom or brush. Never shoot away snow and ice with a hard object.
- Reduce the risk of frozen pipes. Let faucet run in the barrel, leave cupboard doors open and lock all doors and windows to keep the heat inside.
- If you think your gas smells, act fast! Leave the area immediately and call 911 and the Atmos Energy emergency number within a safe distance at 866.322.8667.
Remove snow buildup from gas meters, pipes and holes
Accumulation of snow and ice can damage gas meters and pipes and make it difficult to reach in emergencies. Blocked holes for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous accumulation of carbon monoxide gas.
To keep your home and family safe during snow or icy weather:
- Remove buildup of snow and ice from meters and pipes.
- Make sure the external holes for dryers and other natural gas equipment are clean.
- Remove snow and ice safely using a broom or brush gently. Do not use ice-melting chemicals, salt, shovels or tools.
- Make sure the meter is visible to snow plow drivers when it is near a street or sidewalk.
- If you remove snow from the roof, make sure it does not end up on the meter or be buried.
- Repair sweets that can drip water on the meter and can freeze.
