Atlanta’s MLB All-Star Game move is ‘serious mistake’, says former Commissioner Fay Vincent

Former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent fired Rob Manfred after he made the decision to move the All-Star Game out of Atlanta after Georgia changed its voting laws.

Vincent, who wrote an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, said Manfred made a decision “without first arguing the content of the law.” He added that Manfred had made a ‘serious mistake’, and that the All-Star Game only benefits the city where the game is played, which means that people working on the game, and local businesses around Atlanta’s ballpark now will suffer during the mid-summer exhibition.

“The players will be paid no matter where the game takes place,” Vincent wrote. “MLB will get the same television revenue. The only people hurt by Manfred’s decision are the stadium workers and local vendors from Atlanta … Mr. Manfred did not express specific criticism of Georgia’s voting rights. Now he has himself in. the awkward position of defending Colorado’s voting laws. ‘

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Major League Baseball will move the game to Coors Field in Colorado. In response, the Government of Georgia, Brian Kemp, addressed the situation and compared the procedures of the two states, saying he was surprised by the decision.

“Georgia has 17 days of early voting, including two optional Sundays, Colorado has 15 days,” the Republican governor said. “So, what I’m told also has a requirement for photo IDs. So it doesn’t make much sense to me.”

Colorado requires voters to show identification when voting in person, and the state says that from the first time, voters may be required to include a copy of their identification in their ballot paper.

Colorado relies on signature agreement for absentee ballots other than those of first-time voters, which Georgia did during the 2020 election.

Colorado also automatically sends ballot papers to all registered voters, while Georgia only sends them to those who request them, a measure to prevent the ballot papers from being sent to the wrong address or those who are no longer eligible.

Georgia law extends the number of weekends with early voting and standardizes the hours from at least 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also limits the number of ballots to one per 100,000 voters, or one per early voting website, whichever is smaller.

Traps in Georgia should be placed in a provincial election office or in an early polling station so that they are only available for monitoring during business hours.

Last week, before the MLB said it would retire in response to state law, Biden said he would “strongly support” baseball players to move the game.

“I think today’s professional athletes are acting incredibly responsibly. I would strongly support them to do that,” Biden told ESPN last week. “People look at them. These are leaders. The people who are most victimized are the leaders in these different sports.”
