At the Buzzer: Indiana 67, Iowa 65 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts on a 67-65 victory over Iowa:

How it happened: Things were dark early for Indiana. Iowa made its first three three-pointers and led 17-4 with the point 13:09 of the first half. It looked like the Hawkeyes might be driving the Hoosiers just outside Branch McCracken Court. Indiana, however, had an answer. And it was mainly fueled by his youth. Jordan Geromino, Anthony Leal and Khristian Lander all gave the Hoosiers solid minutes and with Luka Garza on the bench with two fouls, IU made his move. After Iowa led 31-24 to Joe Wieskamp 2:44 before the break, Indiana scored the final nine points before halftime to take a 33-31 lead.

However, the momentum would be short-lived. Archie Miller went back with his starters to start the second half. By the time Miller brought Geronimo, Leal and Lander back at 15:43, Indiana was 38-35 behind. The Hoosiers returned on a 3-point lead by Trey Galloway within 11:11, but Iowa moved it back to six after a few free throws and a three-point lead by Jordan Bohannon. The Hoosiers responded again when Trayce Jackson-Davis tied the game at 53 with a 3-point game at the 6:06 mark. Indiana won the lead on a Poor Franklin Series by 5:05.

After Indiana missed three of the four throws, Iowa opened up a 3-point lead on two buckets from Garza. IU responds with a 3-pointer from Rob Phinisee with 1:39 to play. Garza split a couple of free throws in the ensuing possession to give Iowa a 62-61 lead. IU responded with a bucket from Race Thompson to play the lead with 55.8 seconds. The Hoosiers then got a stop and Jackson-Davis crashed and both made free throws to give IU a 3-point lead. Bohannon responds with a three-pointer with 27 seconds to play. That set the stage for Armaan Franklin, who nailed a long 2 with 1.6 seconds to take IU to his tenth victory.

Outstanding: Trayce Jackson-Davis (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Race Thompson (15 points, six rebounds) were both fantastic for the Hoosiers. The duo shot together 12-out-22 from the field. Thompson added four touchdowns.

Striking statistics: Indiana scored 17 points out of 11 Iowa turnover. The Hoosiers also held Iowa by 0.96 points per possession, a lowest season for the Hawkeyes.
