The latest wave of launch of gaming phones has begun. Last week, Nubia announced the absolutely ridiculous Red magic 6, and now Asus has arrived with a slightly different take-one it is a a little more sophisticated while still packing massive specs.

The first thing you will notice on the ROG Phone 5 (Asus skipped 4 to avoid crash) is an updated design. Asus dicaught the attention-looking for an active venting channel for the company used on the previous model for a slimmer, though still cyberpunk-inspired, back, available this time in black and white. And while Asus is increasing the amount of RGB lighting, the use of a perforated grille has given the LEDs a slightly more mature look.

Inside, the ROG Phone 5 contains similar specifications as the previous model, including a 2448 x 1080 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 144Hz (just slightly lower than the 165Hz screen used in the Red Magic 6), along with a Snapdragon 888 chip, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, large 6,000 mAh battery, and triple rear cameras (64 MP main, 13 MP ultra-wide and 5 MP macro). But this is just the base model.

There is also a Pro model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, but the real flash model is the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, with a whopping 18 GB RAM and more importantly, features a rear panel with a built-in black and white screen that can be programmed to display what you want.

The colored SIM cases are also adapted to read 'GLHF', which is a nice touch.

I appreciate all the small adjustments that Asus has made to the ROG Phone 5 of this generation, including an 800-nit screen that is 200 just brighter than before, even better stereo speakers on the front (which is impressive since ROG Phone 3 all of the best sound on a smartphone), and 300Hz touch sampling for reduced input latency during gaming. Heck, Asus even went so far as to include a new DAC and bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack on the ROG Phone 5 after dropping the port on previous ROG devices.

And to really improve its mobile gaming credit, Asus has teamed up with Sentons to improve the ROG Phone 5’s fifth generation AirTriggers, which pack nine small piezoelectric sensors in both of the phone’s touch-sensitive triggers for the most responsiveboard still controls.

Finally, to support better mobility and faster charging, Asus has split the 6,000 mAh battery of ROG Phone 5 into two different sections, enabling better heat management and charging up to 65. watts.

The only real skater at the moment is that there are no official details for when the ROG Phone 5 will be available in the US. which means we have to rely on European prices for now. The standard ROG 5 is expected to go on sale sometime in March starting at 799 euros (about $ 950), with the Pro model arriving in April for 1,199 euros (about $ 1,430), and the Ultimate Edition is expected to arrive in May at 1,299 euros (about $ 1,550).
