Asus is no stranger to the pit two screens on a single laptop, but for its next mobile phone, Asus apparently wants to push some boundaries by placing a small secondary screen on the back of the upcoming ROG Phone 5.
The idea of having a bonus show on the back of a phone is silly, but it comes from a phone line aimed at gamers where Asus has already added RGB lighting, translucent air vents, and multiple USB-C ports, to stick to a small second screen are actually not that extreme.
In a short video on Weibo noticed by GSMArenathe ROG Phone 5 appears to display a small dot matrix screen that is slanted on the screen back so you can see notifications or create small personal messages that you can see even when the phone is on its face. In some respects it is the natural progression for a telephone range that has been slowly accumulating brighter and brighter RGB lighting over the past three years.

Aside from a gimmicky second display, teasers for the RUS Phone 5 released by Asus show a pretty interesting device with an almost ringless design, and rumored specs featuring a massive 6,000 mAh battery, 65-watt fast charging and includes support for 144Hz display. If you are wondering about the ROG Phone 4 it was probably skipped as a result of the number 4 is considered unlucky throughout Asia.
However, the potential surprise for interested buyers is that, although Asus usually launches its new flagship phone sometime in late spring or early summer, it looks like the ROG Phone 5 may already be announced in the first quarter of 2021.
Unfortunately, while we’re still awaiting an official announcement, other information about Asus’ next gaming phone is still available thin. But as someone who thought Asus should lean even more into its excessive aesthetic gamer after reviewing the ROG phone 3, you can bet I’ll be watching this next issue.
