Associated Press Reporter Thein Zaw has been jailed in Myanmar for bloody protests

Associated Press journalist Thein Zaw is being held after being arrested by police in Yangon, Myanmar on Saturday morning, while protesting against the military coup that overthrew leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government. According to the AP, he is being held in Yangon’s infamous Insein prison, which has long been known for its inhuman treatment of political prisoners. “The Associated Press is calling for the immediate release of AP journalist Thein Zaw, who was detained in Myanmar while performing his job,” said Ian Phillips, AP vice president for international news. “Independent journalists must be allowed to report the news freely and safely without fear of retaliation. AP strongly condemns the arbitrary detention of Thein Zaw. Security forces in the capital, Yangon, opened fire on protesters on Sunday, killing at least 18 people and wounding 30, the UN Human Rights Office said, citing “credible information.”
