Assassin’s Creed Valhalla updates will further hint at PCs and next-generation consoles for Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a nice game, no doubt, but it probably does not push the next generation of consoles as hard as it can. Unlike Ubisoft’s own Watch Dogs: Legion, the game does not contain ray tracing and does not offer true 4K on PS5 or Xbox Series X. Well, it seems like more improvements are on the way for the high-end platforms.

Of course, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has the usual range of paid and free content updates coming in 2021, but in a recent interview with Game Informer, Ubisoft producer Julien Laferrière alluded to some of the other improvements in the works.

If we look at Valhalla’s plans after the launch, it was important to me to improve quality of life and also to be able to respond to the new platforms, because it is still improving. We also have an excellent reception on PS5, Series X and PC – people definitely enjoy the best features of the game, so we want to continue to profit from it. It’s not meant to sound like bullshit or cliché, but for me it’s about hearing what the player base says and responding to it, in addition to the extra content and features.

Unfortunately, if you expect naval battles to be one of the things added to Valhalla, you will be disappointed. Laferrière explains that they were a deliberate creative decision based on Ubisoft’s Viking research …

One thing I can say that we did not think we could work very early on was naval battles. We actually found out that Vikings did not wage many sea battles; we thought they might be shooting flaming arrows like in Odyssey. But they just did not do it. So, we said, “There is no sea on our map, only rivers … we will treat the ship more like a vehicle.”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, PS4 and PS5.
