According to a witness, a 70-year-old Asian woman fought back against her much younger attacker in San Francisco on Wednesday.
The unidentified woman, who was crying after the alleged attack, told Chinese police the man punched her in the face without provocation while she was standing on the sidewalk.
Video, posted on Twitter by KPIX-TV, San Francisco Sports Director Dennis O’Donnell, shows the woman with a black eye holding an ice pack with one hand on her face and carrying a stick that she allegedly used to repel her alleged attacker in the other hand. .

The alleged attacker, who was handcuffed to a stretcher, had a bloody mouth. Looks like he’s in his thirties.
“You bum, why did you hit me?” she shouted at the man, according to the station in Chinese. She also turned to bystanders on the sidewalk to accuse him of beating her.
“The woman said she was hit,” O’Donnell said. “She fell back. From what I could see, she wanted more of the guy on the stretcher and the police held her back.”
O’Donnell came across the scene while running in the morning.
San Francisco police are investigating a 39-year-old man for the attack and another one on an 83-year-old Asian man on Wednesday, according to KPIX. Police did not specify whether the man from the video, who has not been identified, is the suspect being investigated or that race is considered a factor in the alleged assaults.
The attacks come amid an increase in anti-Asian attacks across the country and a day after 8 people – including 6 Asian women – were shot dead in Georgia.
“We have to do our job and we have to investigate these cases with all the resources we need and we have to make arrests, and we have done that,” San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott told reporters.
