As Massachusetts passes 2 million COVID vaccinations, health officials report 1,694 new infections, 10 more deaths

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts continued to decline this week as the state announced 1,694 new infections and another 10 deaths on Saturday.

On Saturday, the state also reached a milestone, with more than 2 million residents now fully vaccinated. But Saturday also brought a grim milestone because the global death toll from the coronavirus was 3 million people above.

So far through the pandemic, 630,206 Massachusetts residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and 17,110 have died from the virus. The new cases from Saturday are based on 97,742 molecular tests, according to data from the state Department of Public Health.

There are currently 34,682 active cases of the virus, which according to DPH data has decreased from 35,100. This is the fifth consecutive day of the decline in active cases.

As of Saturday, 693 people with the virus are being admitted to hospital, including 169 in intensive care and 99 intubating, per DPH.

The seven-day average positive test stands at 2.15%. Although the average positive tests and hospitalizations have been fairly steady recently, data show that the average number of deaths per day has been declining since the end of March.

This week, 59 cities and towns are considered at high risk for COVID spread, compared to 77 the previous week.

Across Massachusetts, public schools this week reported a record of COVID cases, with 1,095 students and 184 staff members testing positive. Officials say the increase in the number of virus cases could be linked to the return of hundreds of thousands of students to school buildings to learn in person, after relying on hybrid and remote models.
