Artemi Panarin leads Rangers’ standout victory over Penguins

Artemi Panarin had a goal and three assists, and the New York Rangers drove a four-goal lead to an 8-4 spot from the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Adam Fox had a goal and two shots for the Rangers, and Colin Blackwell, Kaapo Kakko, Mika Zibanejad, Ryan Strome and Pavel Buchnevich added a goal and an assist.

Rookie Alexis Lafreniere also scored his sixth goal of the year for New York, which has stood 3-0-1 in its last four games. Rank shooter Igor Shesterkin hit 41 times.

Mike Matheson has a goal and assists, and Jared McCann, Jake Guentzel and Brian Dumoulin also passed for Pittsburgh, dropping the second consecutive point.

Tristan Jarry, after an absence of two games, allowed four goals on 11 shots for the first time before being relieved by Casey DeSmith, who hit 10 times.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead at 1:35 when Blackwell’s pass was from Matheson. Zibanejad rebounded 7:28 to move it to 2-0.

At a Rangers match, Panarin raised a shot through a screen at 9:58 for a 3-0 lead.

The Penguins responded 40 seconds later, also on a power play, while McCann passed from the top of the left circle through Fox’s legs and under Shesterkin’s pillows.

With 17.7 seconds left in the first, Strome passed from above the right spot on a short-range shot during another power play to make it 4-1.

Lafreniere scored it at 12:20 of the second 5-1 on a hinged shot that came behind DeSmith and was hit over the goal line by John Marino of Pittsburgh. Sixteen seconds later, Matheson closed it out at 5-2 on a rising shot from the left circle.

The Rangers scored their third power goal at 6:10 of the third, on Kakko’s point of a Trouba shot for a 6-2 lead.

Matheson’s backhand pass set up Guentzel’s one – time essay to close it out at third – place at 8:04.

At 10:22 from the third point, Fox, who extended his points period to 11 games, scored from short range and Buchnevich scored 19 seconds later to increase it to 8-3.

Dumoulin’s goal with 1:24 left made it 8-4.
