Arson suspect arrested after standstill, chases a fast chase in Paramount

PARAMOUNT, California (KABC) – A suspect in arson was involved in a dramatic fight with sheriff’s deputies on Thursday morning after a swift chase ended in a residential street in Paramount, authorities said.

The chase began shortly before 8 a.m. in Compton and later came to a halt in San Jose Avenue and Somerset Boulevard, where several patrol vehicles positioned themselves behind the suspect’s car.

The man is suspected of possibly trying to set his house on fire after receiving an eviction notice, a Los Angeles Sheriff’s spokesman said.

Smoke was seen emanating from the vehicle after delegates apparently fired less than lethal rounds. At least one of the car’s windows is broken and glass is scattered on the street.

About 30 minutes into the standstill, a small flame was visible in the vehicle. Delegates approached the passenger side and deployed a fire extinguisher, spraying a large cloud delayed and then retreating.

The suspect, who was also wanted because he swung a weapon, remained in the car but moved to the back seat.

Authorities later called three armored vehicles to the scene that surrounded the driver’s two-door vehicle while the stalemate continued.

Several houses had to be evacuated.

The strike lasted for hours before authorities arrested the suspect around 11am.
