PHOENIX (AP) – On the second day of the new year, Arizona reported nearly 8,900 additional known COVID-19 cases, giving the state a two-day pandemic for new cases.
The 8,083 cases reported on Saturday added to the 10,060 cases reported on Friday, a total of 18,943 in two days. The state’s previous two-day high was 17,649 on December 13-14.
The total number of cases since the pandemic across the country now stands at 539,150.
Arizona also reported 46 deaths on Saturday, raising the total from the pandemic to 9,061.
The number of infections is thought to be much higher than reported because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest that people can become infected with the virus without feeling sick.
Arizona had the second worst COVID-19 diagnosis rate in the past week, just behind California. The diagnosis rate is calculated by dividing the population of the state by the number of new cases in the past week.
