Arctic cold front approaching; Monday blizzard update

DETROIT An Arctic cold front is approaching the area early Friday morning.

At the time of writing this article (Friday 04:00), the temperature in front of the front is in the low to mid 30s (0 to 1 degree Celsius), and the temperature behind the front is already up to 20 degrees (-7 degrees ) dropped Celsius) on at Houghton Lake.

Once the front is over, our temperatures will drop in the mid 20s (-4 to -3 degrees Celsius) and be almost steady there for the balance of the day. However, a gusting northwesterly wind of 10 to 20 km / h keeps cold fever in the teens (-11 degrees Celsius) well below.

There are a few snow showers up front, but I don’t expect most of us to pile up – maybe a dust in the thumb.

Today’s sunrise is at 07:55 and today’s sunset at 17:35

It will be mostly clear on Friday night, and it will be our coldest night of the winter season so far, with lows in the low teens (-11 degrees Celsius).

Saturday seems like a fantastic day to get on the slopes if you are a skier or snowboarder! In the morning we will have mostly sunny weather, and then some high clouds will come in during the afternoon. Elevations in the upper 20s (-2 degrees Celsius) will not be too difficult to take if we can retain the sunshine. Oh, and the wind will also be less than 10 km / h!

Clouds increase on Saturday night, with lows close to 20 degrees (-7 degrees Celsius).

Light snow develops on Sunday, and it does not seem to be a big deal – an inch or less accumulation (probably less). Heights near 30 degrees (-1 degrees Celsius).

I’m starting to tend a bit towards a more general solution in the overnight computer models, and our Monday storm now looks more like a storm on Monday night.

I think most of the day on Monday will be dry, and maybe snow will develop near the state line late in the day.

Although there are still some small differences in the models that make a BIG difference in our forecast, it looks like the snow will be heading north on Monday night. The best chance of seeing a congestion of a few centimeters is between M-59 / Hall Road and the state line. The further south you are in your area, the better the chance that you have an influential snowfall.

Clearly, I can impossibly get so far ahead specifically about amounts of snow, especially not in a situation like this storm (a sharp cut off of snow on the northern edge). But overall it seems to be a scenario where the inch gets only an inch or two, while amounts near the state line can approach five or six inches.

Again, this is PRELIMINARY and may change. Fortunately, with the timing on Monday night, Brandon and I could get really specific with you on Local 4 News Today Monday morning, as well as on ClickOnDetroit.com and our app.
