Apple’s next iPhone can boast an always-on display

Rumors about the 2021 iPhone series are gaining steam quickly. According to AppleInsider, well-known leak Max Weinbach and EverythingApplePro shared a flurry of next-generation iPhone leaks, including an ever-present display. Reportedly, the battery-efficient 120Hz LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) screen will mimic your lock screen and deliver a handful of information without any input, much like what you see on some Android devices. Only the battery and the clock would be visible throughout, but a “bar and icons” would show your notifications. New notifications will appear, but only for a short time.

Weinbach also echoed rumors from analysts about upgraded cameras, including improved ultra-wide cams (with better performance in low light), automatic astrophotography, and a Galaxy S21-like portrait video mode. You can also see stronger MagSafe magnets. Adding your wallet should not slip off if you take your iPhone out of your pocket. This will not necessarily lead to the fabulous portable iPhone, but it is definitely a better case for such a step.

Weinbach claims that the design will not change much this year, except for a pleasant mat on the Pro models. Numerous earlier rumors have it the iPhone uses a smaller, less intrusive notch for Face ID and the front camera, along with a possible on-screen fingerprint reader.

We take these rumors along with the proverbial grain of salt. No matter how accurate Weinbach may be, Apple can easily cut or change features before production begins. The company allegedly dropped 120Hz screens from the iPhone 12 family due to, for example, battery life. An exhibition that is always on the go, however, makes sense with advances in technology. LTPO is the key to making always-on-screens viable in recent Apple Watches, and they have been present in devices such as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for some time. Apple can catch up on features that are always on without sacrificing much (if any) long life.
