Apple will soon be able to repair the back glass of the iPhone 12 without replacing the entire device

When an iPhone or other Apple device experiences hardware failure, Apple technicians perform an analysis of the device to determine if it can be easily repaired and if the device needs to be replaced completely. However, the company will soon be able to repair things like Face ID sensors and even cracked rear window on iPhone 12 models without replacing the device.

In an internal memorandum sent by Genius Bars and Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) obtained by MacRumors, Apple announced today that technicians will have access to a new method that enables them to repair more parts of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 without the need for a replacement unit.

According to the memo, Apple will be able to replace the logic board, Face ID sensors and even the back glass of an iPhone with the new “iPhone Rear System”. At the moment, if you take an iPhone with one of these expenses to Apple, the company will only offer you the option to replace the device with a new one.

The only components that are not eligible for a repair of the same unit are basically the cameras, which still need a replacement unit. Although the screen is also not replaceable with this new method, Apple can already offer a new screen without replacing the entire iPhone.

For example, if a customer has an iPhone 12 mini with a cracked glass, technicians can replace the entire back of the device with the new case on the original screen and the rear camera. For this reason, the customer’s screen and rear camera must be free from damage or functional failure, according to their Apple device, to be eligible for the same repair method.

This is likely to reduce the time for repairs at Apple Stores and AASPs, as consumers sometimes have to wait a few days before receiving the replacement unit, while some in-store repairs can be handled. The company claims that it is part of its commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the product it sells.

Apple says the new repair method will be available in all countries where the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are sold. At least for now, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are not eligible for repairs of the same unit.
