Apple Watch Series 7 could bring blood glucose monitor, the patent describes the technology

Apple may just bring a new health-focused technology to the Watch that will appear later this year. The new Watch, Apple Watch Series 7, can monitor blood glucose without drawing blood. And a new patent now shows how the technology can be implemented. The patent application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) entitled “Terahertz Spectrosopy and Imaging In Dynamic Environments With Performance Enhancements Using Ambient Sensors” states that the iPhone manufacturer can use absorption spectroscopy to obtain non-invasive blood sugar readings.

It is also mentioned that the technology can use terahertz electromagnetic radiation instead of using light through the body to detect ‘gas, health / quality of liquid or solid materials’. But the patent also mentions a possible problem. The implementation of the technology could lead to the Watch losing water resistance. The blood sugar reading should also be accurate. If the reading is a bit off, the user may end up taking too much insulin and having a hypoglycemic or low blood sugar attack, Phonearena reports.

What’s more is that the technology can drain battery faster than before, and if the watch can fit all the components. In all this would mean a rise in the price of the device.

The report adds that the same technology can be used to detect skin cancer and other related problems. While the patent does not necessarily mean that Apple will definitely bring blood glucose monitors to Apple Watch, it does mean that the company is at least considering working on it. For what’s worth it, Samsung will also expect to bring a blood glucose monitor into its next smartwatch that is expected to arrive later this year.
