Apple Watch can detect Covid-19 before symptoms occur, new study programs

A new study has shown that Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and other devices can detect Covid-19 even before the wearer has an idea that they are infected.

Smart watches are becoming increasingly effective as health monitoring devices, with the latest models offering metrics such as blood oxygen level measurements (and blood oxygen levels may be a useful indicator at this time because they are related to Covid19).

But a new study from the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, reported by CBS News, found that smartwatches that can perform continuous or regular heartbeat monitoring can detect subtle changes in a wearer’s heartbeat. These changes may indicate that the carrier Covid-19 is already seven days before any symptoms are experienced, or the infection may be picked up during testing. The study followed nearly 300 health workers on Mount Sinai with Apple Watches between April 29 and September 29, 2020. Apple was not involved in participating in or funding the study.

Rob Hirten, assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine in Mount Sinai, New York, said: “Our goal was to use tools to identify infections during infection or before people knew they were sick. We have “The heart already knows. Rate-change markers change as inflammation develops in the body, and Covid is an incredible inflammatory event that allows us to predict that people are infected before they know it.”

The study showed that the variation in heart rate, i.e. the variation in time between heartbeats, differed in people with Covid-19 compared to those without.

High heart rate variables do not mean an increased heart rate. This indicates that an individual’s nervous system is active, adaptable and resilient to stress.

This is all important because it appears that more than half of the cases of Covid-19 are spread by asymptomatic carriers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If a carrier can find out that they have Covid-19, even without showing symptoms, they can be careful to isolate themselves.

One of the benefits of devices like the Apple Watch is that it is always on the owner’s wrist, providing a way to collect data that is constant and effortless. The watch does all the work to collect data, no input from the carrier is required.

Other studies have been done, including one from Stanford University and one from Fitbit which is also aimed at finding indications of Covid-19 as early as possible.

The next phase will be for the portable to notify the carrier of the detected indications. Though the thought of your Watch may tell you that your Covid-19 is not a pleasant thought, your friends and family members who spread it from you to spread the disease to them can be very grateful.
