Apple promotes its hardware chief, Dan Riccio, to a new role “focusing on a new project.” He will report to CEO Tim Cook on Monday.

Riccio was previously the senior vice president of the hardware engineering company, and signed the physical aspects and electrical engineering of Apple products, including iPhones. He’s been on Apple’s executive team since 2012 reporting to Cook.

In its announcement, Apple did not mention which project Riccio would be working on.

“I look forward to doing what I love most – focusing all my time and energy on Apple to create something new and wonderful that I can no longer be excited about,” Riccio said in a statement.

Apple rarely discusses future products, but over the past few years, the technology giant has been working on unreleased electric motors, as well as virtual reality and augmented reality headsets.

John Ternus will take over for Riccio. Ternus was previously a VP at Apple and its public profile has grown over the past few years. Last year, he was a major presenter of the company’s transition from Intel processors to its own M1 processors for laptops during a live launch event.
