Apple starts folding the iPhone early and tests the Touch ID on the screen for ‘iPhone 13’

Apple began early development work on a foldable iPhone and plans to make changes for the 2021 iPhone series, though one major upgrade may include the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor on the screen.

According to a Bloomberg reported Friday, Apple has yet to make plans to launch a foldable iPhone. So far, it has developed prototype folding screens for internal testing, but the work does not extend much beyond the screen.

Apple’s folding screen reportedly relies on a “mostly invisible hinge with the electronics behind the screen.” The Cupertino technology giant has also discussed various screen size options, including a device that can unfold like an iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 6.7-inch footprint. Bloomberg note that Apple does not even have a complete prototype for a phone yet, pointing out that a foldable iPhone is years away or may never debut.

Rumors of an “iPhone fold” have been circulating for years from time to time, although the concept mostly exists in the form of numerous patents. However, previous reports have suggested that Apple is testing iPhone prototypes.

Instead of a folding iPhone, Apple apparently focuses on its next range of iPhone and iPad devices that will be launched later in 2021. Internally, 2021 is becoming an “S” year for the iPhone, with few major designs or features. changes compared to the iPhone 12 series.

Apple is reportedly still testing one major update for the so-called “iPhone 13”, and that’s a fingerprint reader on display.

The company dropped Touch ID in its flagship devices in 2017, but the fingerprint verification system is still used in several current iPhone, iPad and Mac models. There are also indications that Apple has been working to bring the feature back to its premium devices to complement Face ID.

In August 2019, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the 2021 iPhone series could include both Face ID and Touch ID. Qualcomm, which is probably the supplier of the components of the fingerprint sensor, has also made a faster fingerprint reader.

The company is also considering ignoring the charging port in a future iPhone model, leaving the MagSafe charger and Qi as the only charging technology available. For the iPad, it is said that Apple is planning a new iPad Pro that is similar to the current model, but with a mini-LED screen and a faster processor.

Finally, Bloomberg confirms Apple will launch an “AirTags” tracking device in 2021.
