Apple raised $ 2 million in Brazil to sell iPhones without chargers

Apple was fined nearly $ 2 million in the Brazilian state of São Paulo for violating Consumer Law for lack of a charger in the box for newer iPhones, Brazilian Technology News Tilt reports.

iPhone 11 pro charger

Procon-SP, São Paulo’s consumer protection agency, has decided to fine Apple after intensive investigation into the decision to remove the power adapter from the boxes of iPhones. With the iPhone 12, Apple took the power adapter out of the box and said it would reduce carbon emissions and the use of rare earth metals.

In December, the Brazilian agency Apple announced that selling an iPhone in the country without a charger in the box was a violation of the Consumer Defense Act. Apple has responded to the agency’s concerns by saying that most customers already have extra adapters and that it is not necessary to provide another one in the box.

Fernando Capez, executive director of Procon-SP, gave Apple a stern warning to Apple following the fine, saying it must respect and understand Brazilian consumer laws and institutions. In addition to the lack of charger, Apple is also fined for misleading customers about the water resistance in iPhones.

Since the ‌iPhone‌ 7, iPhones have been water resistant to various specifications. For example, the recent ‌iPhone 12‌ series has been certified for immersion of water up to 6 meters for as long as 30 minutes.

Procon-SP claims that Apple has refused to repair devices for customers who have suffered water damage with their “waterproof” iPhones, even though they are under warranty. Other allegations being made to Apple are allegations that it deliberately slows down older phones with iOS updates to encourage customers to purchase newer models.

Apple will have the chance to appeal the $ 2 million fine. We asked Apple for comment and will update this article when we hear it.
