Apple offers iCloud Keychain Support for Chrome for Windows, but it’s not ready yet

Users caught between Apple and Microsoft can now easily manage passwords: iCloud Keychain seems to be coming to Windows 10 as a Chrome extension (via MacRumors). It’s already in the iCloud for Windows 10 app, but there’s only one small problem: the Chrome extension is not yet available.

The latest version of iCloud for Windows 10 includes ‘Chrome Extensions Support for iCloud Passwords’ in the list of new features, and when you open the app, there’s a new option to sync passwords. If you check this box, a sign-in prompt may appear, along with a request for two-factor authentication. According to Apple’s support page, you need to enable two factors for your account to access the feature, which is probably a good choice, since in theory you’ll sync all your passwords.

I say ‘in theory’ because after signing in again, you’ll be asked to download the iCloud Passwords extension for Chrome. However, the download button only takes you to a 404 page, and if you search for the extension in the Chrome Web Store, it does not appear. It looks like Apple may have released the iCloud for Windows update early.

This is not the extension promised to me.

Hopefully the Chrome extension will be available soon, as accessing iCloud Keychain on Windows would make life a lot easier for people who use it on their iPhones, iPads or Macs. However, if you simply cannot wait, you can always switch to a dedicated password manager. Of course, if you’re already using iCloud Keychain, it can be very difficult to move all your passwords, so it’s better to just wait a little longer.
