Apple Maps adds new Waze-like features for speed traps, accidents and other road hazards

Apple is bringing a variety of Waze-like features to Apple Maps with the release of iOS 14.5. With the update, users can report speed traps, accidents and other road hazards with Siri, CarPlay or via the Apple Maps app on the iPhone.

When you first use Apple Maps after updating to iOS 14.5, the Siri navigation voice will tell you about the new features.

Apple gives users a handful of different ways to report these dangers. First, you can use Siri to report hazards by simply saying, ‘Hey Siri, report an accident.’ You can also report dangers, speed traps, and accidents using the Apple Maps interface on CarPlay.

From the Apple Maps app on the iPhone, you can start navigating and then swipe from the bottom to find the new “Report” option. Here are the new features for Crowdsourcing to report hazards.

If enough users report a speed trap, hazard, or accident, it should appear on the map as a warning to other Apple Maps users, similar to Waze.

TechCrunch explain:

To take advantage of the new features, drivers can report road issues and incidents using Siri on their iPhone or via Apple’s CarPlay. For example, during navigation, they will be able to tell Siri things like ‘there’s a header’, ‘there’s something on the way’ or ‘here’s a speed trap’. They will also be able to correct information about accidents or danger warnings by saying things like “the danger is gone” or the “incident is no longer here.”

The new Waze-like features are the latest examples of Apple’s work to revamp and expand Apple Maps. More than a year ago, Apple officially completed the rebuilt Apple Maps in the United States, offering users faster and more accurate navigation, improved details, better coverage, and more.

What do you think of these new reporting features in Apple Maps? Will they stop you from using Google-owned Waze? Let us know in the comments!
