Apple is developing two versions of the Mac Pro to succeed the acMac Pro first released in December 2019, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The first updated Mac Pro is a direct successor to the current Mac Pro and will use the same design. It may also be equipped with Intel processors rather than Apple silicone chips, and it may be one of the only machines in the Mac series to still rely on Intel technology. Rumor has it that most other machines are switching to Apple silicone.
The second machine will use Apple silicone chips and it will be less than half of the current Mac Pro, placing it somewhere between the existing Mac Pro and the Mac mini. It has a mostly aluminum exterior and Bloomberg suggests that it might evoke the Power Mac G4 Cube ‘nostalgia’.
Apple is testing Apple silicone chips with as many as 32 high-performance cores for its computers, and there are also 16 to 32-core graphics options available. For its best machines, however, Apple is developing more expensive 64- and 128-core GPUs, which will be several times faster than the graphics options Apple uses from AMD.
There is no word on when the two new Mac Pro models may appear. Apple is working to switch its Mac series to Apple silicone chips, a process that is expected to take up to two years. In a previous report, Bloomberg said that the Apple silicone Mac Pro is planned to launch by 2022.
