Apple iPhone 12 mini sales slow down as smaller smartphones lose their appeal – reported

(Reuters) – Apple Inc.’s iPhone 12 mini sales in the US were just 5% of total sales of its new phones during the first half of January, Counterpoint, the provider of the operating data, said on Tuesday and contributed to signs of the muted demand for the new smaller version of its flagship device.

Smartphone users have switched to larger devices over the past year as they devour more video content along the way and bulge onto visually rich social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and Snapchat.

JP Morgan analyst William Yang said in a statement last week that weak demand for the smaller iPhone 12 and 12 mini could lead Apple to halt production of the mini in the second quarter.

“The adjustment of the product mix is โ€‹โ€‹well expected by investors and should not come as a negative surprise,” Yang added.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

The company introduced a smaller variant of the iPhone 12 model last year, but demand for the smaller smartphones appears to be weaker compared to the high-end iPhone 12 Pros and the older iPhone 11s.

“This is in line with what we see in the wider world market, where screens below 6.0” now make up about 10% of smartphones sold, “said counterpoint analyst Tom Cang.

Apple shipped its iPhone 12 series a few weeks later than usual last year, but an expanded number of models and a new look have fueled the pent-up demand for upgrades, especially in China.

Last month, the company reported $ 65.60 billion in quarterly revenue from its iPhones business in Cupertino, California, which broke a record three years ago.
