Apple has thrown a small sensor into the HomePod Mini that can measure the temperature and humidity in a room, according to a Bloomberg report Monday. The component, apparently not previously announced, could help bolster Apple’s ambitions for smart homes.

The HomePod Mini was launched in November, costs $ 99 compared to the $ 300 HomePod original. The Siri-powered smart speaker has new features, including a intercom and stereo connection. Earlier this month, Apple said it was the discontinuation of the original HomePod and focuses its efforts on the Mini.

Apple has internally discussed that the sensor sends temperature and humidity readings to Internet-connected thermostats so that adjustments can be made according to current conditions. It is understood that the HomePod Mini can also cause actions, such as turning on a fan, based on the temperature in a room.

According to Texasberg, the temperature sensor is manufactured by Texas Instruments and is located along the bottom edge of the HomePod Mini near its power cable.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
