Apple expands backlight 13-inch MacBook Pro repair program

Apple this week expanded its global 13-inch MacBook Pro screen lighting service program, which allows coverage for suitable notebooks up to five years after the original purchase date or up to three years after the program’s launch date, whichever is longer. The previous cut-off point was four years after the original date of purchase.

Apple launched the app on May 21, 2019 after determining that a ‘very small percentage’ of 13-inch MacBook Pro units sold between October 2016 and February 2018 could have vertical bright areas at the bottom of the screen display or a taillight that stops working completely. . Qualifying models include the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3-ports) and MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3-ports).

To identify which Mac model you have, click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen and then select “About This Mac” from the menu. Apple has not currently extended the app to any other MacBook models.

Apple or an authorized Apple service provider will replace the screen on the relevant 13-inch MacBook Pro units for free. To begin the recovery process, visit the Get Support page on Apple’s website. If you believe that your MacBook Pro has been affected by this issue, and you paid to have your screen repaired, you can contact Apple about a possible refund.

In 2019, the repair website iFixit reported that the backlight problems are caused by a fine bending cable that can wear and break after repeated opening and closing of the screen on the relevant 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple has extended the length of the bending cable by 2 mm in 2018 models, which apparently solved the problem.
