Most of us, when we think of Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs, probably take the stereotype of him as a detail-obsessed quasi-workaholic, whose almost-mania when it comes to the seemingly smallest details that bring about world-changing products. as the iPhone and Apple helped make it the most valuable company in the world.
But Jobs’s former executive assistant Naz Beheshti paints a different picture of her old boss in her new book Pause. Breathe. Choose: Become the CEO of your wellness. She focuses mainly on her wellness coaching practice and also sprinkles the book with nuggets about Apple’s mercury CEO, who encouraged Apple to generate a range of hit products such as the Mac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, which were known for melting then when employees did not meet his standards – and who apparently also placed a premium on quiet time, where he could take a mental break, uninterrupted by the demands to be a CEO. “I quickly discovered what playing time looked like for Steve Jobs, and how it was one of the keys to his success as a major innovator,” Beheshti writes. “When someone was looking for Steve or when he could not be reached by telephone, there was only one place he found almost infallible: in the office of Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer.”
In the same line, Beheshti said CNBC that the myth of Jobs as a tyrannical taskmaster obsessed with work has been surpassed to some extent. She meditated daily, she pointed out, ‘maintained strong relationships’ and had regular physical activity – the latter presumably having a reference to the walks he took regularly, which often included long conversations with people.
But it’s his penchant for spending time essentially hanging out with Ive and his team, which is particularly interesting, and even germinating, for the constant connection that many of us experience in the coronavirus era, with the traditional lines between work and home life more vague than ever. Even one of the most successful, wealthiest businessmen of all time, it seems, has realized the need to clean up, recharge and calibrate.
“We will lose our minds to get in touch with him and try to get him to his meetings,” Beheshti wrote in her book. “At some point we would have to call Jony’s office and enlist his help to drag Steve away from his playing time … His time with Jony gave him the opportunity to laugh, introduce him, create and ‘ to feel a renewed sense of freedom. ‘
