Apple closes Michigan stores amid COVID boom

Apple Inc. announced Friday that the company will temporarily close its Michigan retail stores amid an increase in COVID-19 cases in the state.

Apple said it could still pick up customers with existing orders or items at stores over the weekend.

“Due to the current COVID-19 conditions, we are temporarily closing our stores in Michigan. We take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and look forward to getting our teams and customers back as soon as possible. “Visit http://apple.com/retail for help with an Apple product, more ways to shop, or additional information about our stores,” Apple said in a statement.

Michigan reported 8,955 new COVID-19 cases and 40 additional deaths Friday as the state struggles with an increase in the disease.

The state also again reported an increase in COVID hospitalizations Friday – 4,183 inpatients with the disease in Michigan hospitals, of which 873 were in critical care.
