Apple can announce AirTags and new iPads as early as March 23

According to some sweets with good records, including the Chinese leak ‘Kang’ (via @ DuanRui1205) and John Prosser, Apple may hold its next meeting as soon as possible on March 23. Incidentally, this is the same day that OnePlus launches its new phones.

Apple is expected to announce its long-awaited AirTags – a flashy article tracking system – as well as new iPads. There is a chance that we will also see new third generation AirPods.

AirTags are expected to be a counterfeit item tracking system, but on steroids. It is believed that the labels will use the Ultra-Wideband radio introduced with the iPhone 11, which allows your phone to determine exactly where a lost item is, rather than just giving an estimated location.

Allegedly, the new iPads are the first to use a MiniLED screen. This technology enables deeper blacks than is currently possible with the standard LCDs on iPads, thanks to highly localized backlighting that can be turned off in specific zones.

The current screen illumination of the iPad is in fact always on, so the blacks can get just as deep as the LCD screen allows. While MiniLED is not quite as effective as OLED at creating deep blacks in intricate lighting scenes, it does need to be able to get very close.

The March 23 event will almost certainly be completely digital, given the coronavirus pandemic, so it’s no surprise that we have not heard any more concrete rumors so far. We’ll probably hear official words about the event within the next week, as Apple usually sends out invitations a week or two before the actual date of invitations.

And if March 23 does not play out, the 30th might still be an option; at this point it seems very likely that Apple has it something this month, and these events almost always happen on Tuesdays.
