Apple blocks users from downloading iOS apps on M1 Macs

Shortly after Apple introduced its M1 Macs, a tool was released that allowed users to download unsupported iOS applications. A few months later, and Apple blocked this solution.

So far, users have been able to download the iMazing tool and install unsupported .IPA files. This means users can run iOS apps like Netflix and Instagram, which are not available for download on M1-equipped Macs. But an update on Apple’s side has now made it much harder, if not impossible.

“The change itself was made to the App Store system that delivers the actual .IPA file and it’s all part of Apple’s APIs that manage the DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection of the operating system.” 9to5Mac explain. “Therefore, it is unlikely that a solution will be forthcoming in the future.”

An error message appears when users try to upload an iPhone or iPad app to an M1 Mac with MacOS Big Sur 11.2 beta. The pop-up explains that iOS apps loaded next to it cannot be installed because “the developer did not intend to run it on this platform.” Users using MacOS Big Sur 11.1 are also answered by an error message.

When the M1 chip was introduced, it opened up the potential for iPhone and iPad applications to work on its latest machines. And while many apps are available for download via the Mac App Store, developers can’t make their apps available on the Mac. As a result, many popular programs are not yet available for M1 Macs, which is why sideloading was such a big issue.

Since Apple is moving its entire range of Macs exclusively to M1 chips (or whatever sequel is coming), these developers will hopefully make their applications available. 9to5Mac said if you have apps aside on your M1 Mac, it should still run. But when you try to install new applications, you have no luck.
