A simple treatment for COVID-19 can be cheaper than $ 20 – and this is familiar to most nurses in the school.
Head lice medicine ivermectin is being investigated as a possible treatment for the coronavirus after a promising new study that showed an 80% reduction in the deaths of COVID-19 patients in the hospital.
Only 8 out of 573 patients who received ivermectin died compared to the 44 individuals out of 510 who died after receiving a placebo.
According to GoodRx, an earlier study of the antiparasitic prescription, which costs between $ 17 and $ 43 for a treatment course, showed promising results – by removing all viral RNA within a single 48 hours after a single dose.
Andrew Hill, a virologist at the University of Liverpool, called the new study “transformational” in the search for coronavirus therapy. His findings, based on data from more than 1,400 patients, were revealed in a video posted on YouTube in which Hill discusses his results in a live stream previously aired. The research is currently awaiting peer review before it is published.
“If we see the same trends consistently observed in more studies, it’s going to be a transformational treatment,” Hill said.
However, critics called the conclusion of Hill’s study premature and insisted on further research before ivermectin was an effective treatment – citing other buzzing methods that ultimately could not yield, such as hydroxychloroquine and tocilizumab.
“All we have are observational studies and clinical opinions,” Andrew McLachlan, a professor at the University of Sydney, told the Daily Mail.
“Many of the current studies have a low number of participants, poor study designs and inconsistent (and relatively low) doses for ivermectin, and ivermectin is frequently given in combination with other drugs.”
