Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., appeared unimpressed on Monday by a tweet from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in honor of dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
To show their appreciation for the civil rights icon on the federal holiday, ICE tweeted an image of a King statue, with the text: “Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of hope, justice and equality. ”
Without addressing King directly, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the text again, calling for the agency to be abolished.
Ocasio-Cortez has asked for years to dismantle the agency, even in moments when it seemed her Democratic colleagues had returned from the idea.

Although Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter feed Monday was filled with references to King and his legacy, King’s niece, Alveda King, told Fox News that the congresswoman “should take a page from Martin Luther King Jr.’s book.” ‘
The proposal came in response to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments last week during a virtual city hall in which she referred to President Donald Trump as the ‘poison of white supremacy’.
“I believe the AOC really needs to take a page from Martin Luther King Jr.’s book.” King told Fox News host Harris Faulkner.
Alveda told Faulkner that although her uncle praised the law for keeping bad actors in line, “he also said the law cannot transform the human heart.”

“There are now laws in the books that will severely punish white supremacists, and that must be the case,” she explained. “We know that white supremacy is wrong, it must be punished, but every crime against humanity is bad and therefore we must protect human dignity, but not just with the law. We must change these hearts.”
