Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) blamed Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg in part for the riot over the Capitol last week, highlighting the problems she raised last year when she challenged social media’s attack on disinformation.
Ocasio-Cortez said during a meeting in City Hall on Friday that Facebook was “trying to do as much damage control as possible”.
“But they knew,” she claims. “Not only did they know, but they also allowed.”

The AOC has called for a congressional hearing to see if Zuckerberg and other big tech giants are testifying about how they are tackling disinformation ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

In an interview with Reuters, Sandberg said that Facebook has already removed QAnon, the Proud Boys and the #StoptheSteal mention from the platform.
‘Our enforcement is never perfect, so I’m sure there were more things on Facebook … I think these events were largely organized on platforms that do not have our ability to stop hatred, and that do not have our standards and not ‘we do not have transparency,’ she said.
AOC’s comments come because Facebook has announced that it will review all inauguration-related events and remove those that violate the site’s policies. They will also block events created in the US by accounts and pages based abroad.
